Chung-kung asked about benevolence. The Master said, 'When abroad behave as though you were receiving an important guest. When employing the services of the common people behave as though you were officiating at an important sacrifice. Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire.1 In this way you will be free from ill will whether in a state or in a noble family.' Chun-kung said, 'Though I am not quick, I shall direct my efforts towards what you have said.'

Tchoung koung interrogea Confucius sur le sens d'humanité. Le Maître répondit : « En sortant de la maison, sois attentif, comme si tu voyais un hôte distingué ; en commandant au peuple, sois aussi diligent que si tu célébrais un sacrifice solennel ; ne fais pas à autrui ce que tu ne voudrais pas qu'on te fasse à toi-même. Dans la principauté, personne ne sera mécontent de toi ; dans la famille, personne ne se plaindra de toi. » Tchoung koung dit : « Malgré mon manque d'intelligence, permettez-moi de me mettre au service de ces préceptes. »
